What is Root canal treatment?
A tooth normally has a crown structure that is visible in the mouth and a root that is below the gums in the bone. These roots have many canals in them which are filled with pulp (blood vessels and nerves ) of the tooth.
Root canal is the procedure in which the pulp is removed from the tooth crown and the root canals, and it is eventually replaced with a bio-compatible material.
When do you need RCT / Root canal
A root canal is required when the pulp of the tooth gets infected, inflamed or injured. This normally happens when a tooth decay goes deeper than the outside layers of enamel and dentin to encroach the pulp. This decay causes the pulp to be inflamed or swell up and increases the pressure in the hard covering of the tooth.
In some cases, the pulp gets injured like an accident or biting on something extremely hard, wherein the tooth may break off and the pulp may get exposed and start deteriorating.
You need a root canal if you are facing one or more of these:
Pain on eating or applying pressure
Continuous toothache/sensitivity even while not doing anything
Tooth getting dark
swollen or tender gums
a pimple like growth near the tooth
Procedure for RCT / Root canal
Step 1 - Local Anesthesia
Most root canals are done under local anesthesia so the procedure is normally painless once the anesthesia has taken effect. You will be completely awake and in your senses and will know what all is being done to you.
Step 2 - Removing the pulp & cleaning the canals
When your tooth is totally numb, your dentist will make a hole on the surface of your tooth so that he can access and remove the pulp from the crown and the root canals. Your dentist uses special instruments called the files of various shapes and sizes which can enable him/her to remove maximum of the pulp tissue from the complex curved canals and clean them.
Step 3 - Filling the root canal
Once all the canals are fully clean and dry, they are ready to be filled with biocompatible material like gutta-percha. These gutta-percha cones are shaped according to the shapes of the files to ensure that they optimally fill your canals.
Step 4 - Post obturation Filling & crown
The dentist will end the procedure by filling the small opening in the top of the tooth with a permanent filling after which the tooth is ready to be crowned.
Care after Root canal Treatment
After the appointments when you have been given anesthesia, you have to ensure to not eat anything till the numbness wears off as you might end up injuring yourself in the process.
Also, you have to take care that you do not eat anything hard from your root-canal treated tooth till it is crowned. Once crowned, you can eat everything as before.
